Training System: Complete Guide

Three weeks into Lazy Football and I've figured out the most important mechanic in this football manager game: training is everything. The system runs on 23-hour cycles with skill gains based on age, facilities, and coaching staff — and if you get it wrong, you waste weeks of progress. Here's the complete guide to how training works and how to optimize it.
How Training Works in Lazy Football
Every training session takes 23 hours. You put a player in a Training Center slot, wait, and they come out with added skill points. Simple concept — but the strategy is deep.
The amount of skill points gained depends on three factors:
- Player age — 21-23 year-olds gain the most (6-7 points per session with a legendary coaching staff). At 24-26, gains drop to 4-6. At 27+, gains are minimal — those slots are better used on younger players who benefit more.
- Training Center slots — each level adds capacity. Level 1 = 1 slot, Level 20 = 5 slots. More slots = more players developing every day. For the full building strategy, see the buildings upgrade guide.
- Coach quality — your coaching staff determines base gain per session. With a coaching skill of 67, Chain Rovers averages 6.6 points per session. Staff is tradeable on the secondary market.
The Training Strategy That Changed Everything
I wasted my first week training random players. Anyone with low stats got thrown in. Stupid mistake. If you're just starting out, read my beginner guide first — it'll save you the same errors. What actually works:
Priority system:
- 21-year-olds train every single day, no exceptions
- 22-23 year-olds fill remaining slots
- 24+ only train if they're already squad-critical AND still have room to grow
- 27+ never train. They play matches, recover in Fitness Center, that's it
The math is simple: a 21-year-old trained daily for 3 months gains roughly 300-400 skill points. That can take a 200-power player to 600. Do that across 5-6 players and your squad transforms completely.
Energy Management: The Hidden Skill
Every match costs energy. Every training session costs energy. If you don't manage your Fitness Center carefully, your best players will be exhausted for important matches.
The key formula: performance = power × energy / 100. A 1000-power player at 70% energy only performs like a 700-power player. Below 60%, they're a real liability. The Fitness Center recovers energy — more slots = more players recovering simultaneously. Your physiotherapy staff determines how much energy each session restores. Max energy cap = 100 + FC level.
Important: players currently in the Training Center or Fitness Center can still be selected for match lineups — training doesn't lock them out. But every session costs energy, so plan around your match schedule. If you have a tough opponent coming up, consider resting key players from training to keep their energy high. I cover the full tactical side of energy in my tactics and lineup guide.
Training Results After 3 Weeks
Chain Rovers are still losing more than winning. But my squad power is climbing every week. My best prospect started at power 180 and is now at 450. In this football manager game, that's the only metric that matters long-term.
